Men as Allies

First 20 thoughts I have while walking.

Hot day
Vital areas
Neck, eyes, groin
Elbow is the strongest
Don’t look at your phone
Don’t look at anything
Look straight ahead
Turn around
Memorize the face
Make conversation
Cute skirt
Don’t smile
Bitch face on
Walk confidently
Not too confidently
Don’t look confused
If lost, don’t show that
Pull your skirt down a little
Listen to music, act calm
One earphone off always

As a woman I’m always scared. These are the thoughts I have while walking down one block, just one.

When one of my male friends assaulted my other female friend, most of my male friends did nothing. They never called him out or took any action. If my own circle of male friends did nothing, I wonder if it’s like this in other friend circles.

I along with a team decided to showcase this. Change can only happen if it starts from every small circle. Change will only happen if one steps up and calls out their own friends first. Men need to be better allies and this project tries to highlight that.

We interviewed college men and are currently still interviewing men to create a documentary to emphasize this issue. Men need to be better allies.
