Acid Victim Processs
Problem: Not enough coverage of acid attack cases in India
This project was focused on higlighting the high occurence of acid attacks in India. Shocking as it seems, young women who spurn the romantic outreaches and sexual advances of men are threatened with acid attacks as retaliation and in too many cases, the men carry out the threats. Media coverage lists such incidents as statistics rather than giving it the coverage and marshalling the outrage such incidents demand. The women in India are less empowered to begin with compared to their peers in other developed countries such as US. In addition they have to deal with societal apathy and government inaction. The choices seems to be to agree to be abused in forced relationships or scarred forever with acid attacks.
This piece is entitled “Unravelling Inner Beauty” and is an acrylic on canvas rendition. I believe that the usage of texture paint also highlights the scars, and help viewers build empathy for such victims and encourages them to offer support. These survivors of such ghastly crimes continue to rebuild their lives and regain confidence in themselves in spite of the hideous scars. In “Unravelling Inner Beauty”, I tried to portray the hope and inner beauty that can come to the fore even after such dastardly acts are committed on the victims.
